AT&T is available in my area with a service pack connected to our direct T.V.  The cost ranges from $35/mo for slow speed, $40/mo for moderate speed, and $45/mo for their high speed.  The slowest connection offered is  $19.95/mo with a wireless card you can connect to the service with a download speed of 768 Kbps, and an upload speed of 384 Kbps.  You are able to purchase a security program for $5/mo and they have additional programs that one can buy to help upkeep their computer from getting cluttered (QuickClean).

The most expensive, internet only package is $24.95/mo and downloads are 6.0 Mbps and uploads, 768 Kbps.  They also give a security program and “AT&T Wi-Fi Basic included at thousands of hotspots, including U.S. company-operated Starbucks locations equipped with a hotspot.”  On top of that they give 11 email accounts and dial up nationwide service with each of their internet accounts.

AT&T started in 1885 and were called the American Telephone and Telegraph Company.  They employee 61,600 people and are located in Bedminster, New Jersey.  According to common knowledge, they have been on of the largest and most stable telecommunications network for a long time now.

Verizon internet is also available for $19.99 to $139.95/mo.  Their speeds greatly vary from dial up service with existing phone line to high speed FiOS connections.  The $19.99/mo connection comes with download speed of 1 Mbps and upload speed of 384 Kbps.  This price is only available with an existing Verizon Wireless home phoneline, otherwise it is $29.99.  This connection only lets you browse online and check your email account.  WiFi is not included and the installation process is done by the consumer.  (They send a kit to install the service yourself.)  They provide 9 email accounts.  They also give “personal webspace” which probably means a small website account.  They also offer online account access.

Their fasted internet connection is called FiOS and has a download speed of 50 Mbp and an upload speed of 20 Mbps.  This costs $139.95/mo and includes free email, fiber optic connections and a free router.  There is one computer set up included free and a free “personal webspace.”

Verizon is the product of two companies – GTE and Bell Atlantic.  They merged and formed the internet service provider Verizon Internet in March 16, 2000.  They currently employ 238,000 people and their headquarters are located in New York City.  Their “Operations Center” is in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
