1.   UCLA:  In 1969 the first IMP (interface message processors)  was installed at UCLA college and connected to the first host.  When Stanford Research Institute later got their own IMP, UCLA communicated with them over the “host,”  this was the “first breath of the internet.”

2.   Al Gore was a senator who made sure that people working on building the internet had federal funding.  He helped make sure there was funding for the four National Centers for Supercomputing Applications which lead to the invention of the web browser.

3.   Rand Corporation was a think tank company which employed Paul Baran, the first man to conceive of sending packets rather than long lengthy whole files.

4.   Vint Cerf coined the @ symbol to be used in email addresses to show what system they were coming from.  He also worked with Bob Kahn to create the TCP network in 1973.  TCP is the way that networks can interconnect and the data doesn't get lost in cyberspace, it addresses the packets.

5.   Leonard Kleinrock helped to create the earliest computer networks and first director of ARPA's computer science division.  He foresaw that with the right computer technology, man would expand his activities innumerably.  He wanted to create a networked world of information.

6.   Jeff Bezos created Amazon.com, the largest online retailer.  It started out as a bookstore, but has increased to be one of the most varied online shops out there.  He paved the way for many online consumers both to buy and sell through their storefront.

7.   Marc Andreesee created the first internet browser called Mosiac.  He was a student at Illinois University and later he partnered with Jim Clark to create the Netscape browser.

8.   Jonathan Abrams was the founder of friendster.  It was the first social networking site of its kind in that it was neither a dating site or a geeky forum.  It was the base model of sites like MySpace and Facebook.  He is now the CEO of the company Socializr.

9.   Jerry Yang and David Filo were the founders of yahoo in 1994.  It became the first widely used, and commercialized, web portal and search engine.  It spread worldwide pretty quickly and became a new way to earn income from advertising to people who came looking for an answer or a product.

10. Sergey Brin and Jerry Page were the fathers of google.  They were two Stanford students who made their search engine based on the rankings of people using the web.  It takes the most searched for items and ranks them as the first, second, third, and so on.. depending on the number of search “hits” that it gets.
